Campaign for Real Beauty

We live in a “plastic” society where what is promoted as beautiful is botoxed, siliconed, nipped, tucked, and air brushed. Click here for a brand new commercial by Dove soap which shows the transformation of a “normal” woman into a “super model.” It’s a pretty revealing look at what we consider beautiful and what it takes to get there.

Scott,

I appreciate Dove's "Real Beauty" campaign, and I think that the "real" models they use are quite attractive. I think that most guys would tend to agree (and I think that most women would be somewhat surprised to hear that).

However, Dove is somewhat guilty of exactly what they are criticizing - what you don't see in their campaing is a wrinkle, a pimple, or a patch of dry skin. After all, they are selling a beauty product and they need to establish an ideal image that people will be jealous of and want to aspire to.

I don't want to sound overly negative, just something to think about. That video was great! especially the part where they stretched out her neck. I didn't even look like the same person at the end.

I think any company that "takes up" a social cause likely does so with the hopes that it will somehow benefit sales. So, like you said, Dove is not doing this solely out of the goodness of their hearts.

On the other hand, making money will always be the bottom line, but at least this campaign is better than those companies who use illicit sexual imagery or anorexic models to promote their products.

So like you, I think this is a good step in the right direction.
